EGGS WILL BE ONLY 2D DOZEN DEARER THAN LAST YEAR
Commenting on the Prime Minister’s announcement on the increase in price of eggs, the president of the Wanganui Registered Poultry Keepers’ Association, Mr. D. K. Chamberlain said last night: “It is opportune after the Prime Minister’s statement tonight, in which he announced the reduction of 4d in egg subsidy with a corresponding rise, to point out that the top price of eggs for this year was less than that of last year. “So that even with the increase announced by the Prime Minister, the price is only 2d more than last year’s at this time. While I do not like to see the price of eggs go up, I do feel that the price corresponds favourably with that of other foodstuffs, and that by making every effort, to improve quality the industry will do its best to see that the public does get value for the money it pays for the eggs,” said Mr. Chamberlain.
“The high subsidy that has been necessary to pay for eggs has cost the country a constterable sum, but. with the high costs of the present day, the high subsidy rate or higher prices were necessary or commercial egg production could not have survived.’’
