Auckland Trades Council Officers Elected
AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.I Delegates who have consistently supported the Federation of Labour were all returned when a secret ballot election of officers of the Auckland Trades Council was conducted at the. 13th annual meeting tonight. The victory was assisted by the withdrawal of most of the candidates nominated by unions associated with the Trade Union Congress, established in Wellington last month in opposition to the Federation, while delegates from the majority of dissident unions were absent.
The attendance was 129, compared with an average of 138 for the last 10 meetings. Both the president, Mr. T. F. Anderson (Seamen's Union) and the vice-president, Mr. H. Campbell (Painters’ Union) were returned unopposed. Although the Drivers' Union made a press statement last week that its nominees were not standing, official notice was sent, to the Trades Council and the name of its candidate for secretary, Mr. A. E. Andrews, was printed on the ballot paper. However, Mr. H. Caliagher (Local Body Labourers’ Union) polled more than 100 votes compared with Mr. Andrews’ 19.
