MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC SOCIETY TO GIVE A SCHOLARSHIP
A decision was made by the committee of the Wanganui Musical and Dramatic Society last night to offer a scholarship, to the value of 15 guineas, to the Wanganui Competitions Society, which is to revive its festivals in August this year.
The committee, which was concerned mainly with the details of presenting the musical comedy, “The Belle of New York,” in the last fortnight in May, was of opinion that the Competitions Society is to be greatly encouraged, in that it will help the development of local talent. From the Musical and Dramatic Society’s point of view, there is a great need to develop local men. While it would not specifically tie the conditions under which the scholarship was given, the society would prefer that it be awarded to the competitor in the male section of the competitions who, in the opinion of the judge, showed most promise. A 15-guinea scholarship would enable him to obtain the further tuition which he merited.
It was stated by the secretary of the Competitions Society (Miv L. M. Hallas) last night, that other scholarships are being donated, and it was hoped that they would be announced either this week or early next week. He said that the society was out to encourage talent, and in its first festival hoped to become firmly estabshed. It had received many special prizes, and it was felt that local people would be keen also to assist that very important phase of the society’s work and donate scholarships. This would enable promising competitors to continue their studies.
