HUGHES BROS.’ HOCKEY CUP TOURNAMENT
The Hughes Bros. Cup, won by Rangers, was contested for this year by six-a-side hockey teams under ideal conditions, and with grounds in a fair state. Good open hockey was witnessed by many supporters of the game.
Technical College were very unfortunate in the draw by having to play Rangers A, who were the winners last year and appeared to be the strongest contenders for the trophy this time.
In the semi-finals Federal was drawn to play Rangers, and by the excellent follow-up work by R. J. Rees, a very young player of Federal, they very nearly eliminated Rangers. Federal club appear to have quite a strong team, and if the balance of their team is as good as the six who played in this tournament they should be strong contenders for the Championship Shield this year.
The final was between Hinemoa and Rangers. Shortly after the start of play Roy Mclntyre netted a goal for Rangers. This was equalled a few minutes later by Gordon Hughes for Hinemoa. A few seconds before half-time N. Mclntyre scored another very fine goal, which put Rangers in the lead. The second spell saw Hinemoa away to a strong start to make up the leeway, but they were unfortunate in not being able to score. The final whistle blew with the score unchanged. The winners of the Hughes Bros. Cup for the 1950 season is Rangers.
