Many Horses Engaged For Concluding Day Of Hawke's Bay Autumn Meeting

Several fresh horses which were given a brief respite after the Easter racing and were not produced at Hastings last Saturday will give added interest today to the totalisator double, the Te Mahanga Handicap and the Okawa Handicap, for the concluding day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s autumn meeting.

Last Saturday the distance hack race provided the second “leg” of the double, but today backers will have to take their chances with the open sprinters, and the distance this time is seven furlongs.

Signify, easy winner of the Hawke’s Bay Cup, and Arcara, who finished on for third in that event, are missing from the Te Mahanga Handicap field, and best first-day form available is that of Blue Spec, Action, Barrage and Indian Song.

Blue Spec was responsible for the pace commencing the concluding half-mile of the Hawke’s Bay Cup, and he was not done with till entering on the final furlongs. He should again run an honest race. Action was running on strongly at the fiinsh after being well back early, but he makes a stronger appeal in the Hastings Hack Cup, for which he may be reserved. Barrage is getting on in years, and a better prospect may be Indian Song, who won this race twelve months ago. The Bulandshar mare prefers the sting out of the ground, but she will have to be at her best in this company. The topweight, Carnegie, was a winner as recently as the opening day of the Walrarapa meeting at Carterton, winning the Easter Handicap, and in spite of his second-day defeat he is sure to have friends.

Statesman, had he started, would have been favourite, for he was a winner at his latest start, that being in the City Handicap (one mile) on the concluding day of the Auckland meeting. However he will not fulfil his engagement. Tenor Royal is another newcomer at the meeting. At Feilding he ap-

peared susceptible to improvement, and it was at the autumn meeting last season that he showed his best form. Sorrel’s best form in recent starts was his second to Cheerful Night in the Waipukurau Cup on Easter Monday, but he will meet with much stronger opposition today. Grande Dame and Dennis O’Kelly have both won on the Hastings track earlier in their careers, and both should run respectable races. Dennis O’Kelly was one of the early leaders in the Hawke’s Bay Cup, and he may run out the distance better today. Billy Ruff’n is another with good prospects. Best of the remainder may be Ngarobi, who was a good performer last season and showed signs of a return to form when he finished fifth in the Adderstone Handicap at Awapuni. Bella Mia is another who showed promise at the Easter meeting at Feilding. The race bears an open appearance, but Carnegie, Tenor Royal and Blue Spec, make most appeal. . OKAWA HANDICAP To complicate the position still further in the Okawa Handicap, backers will have to assess first-day sprint and open mile form against that of several newcomers, all with good winning form. With the first three horses in last Saturday’s Havelock Flying missing, investors may look to Phalamint and Peaseblossom. Phalamint was finishing on last Saturday and has won at Hastings earlier. Solimbine, winner of the Oreka Handicap last Saturday, is well placed in the middle of the handicap to add to his consistent record. He ran a solid second at Feilding and was fourth in the Goodbehere Memorial prior to registering his first-day win in easy fashion, and he looks like being one of the hardest to beat today. Nigra was another first-day runner to gain a placing, and Gold Robin, the defeated favourite, may show improvement. It is the newcomers who will provide the major problem for investors. Demonic will be better suited by this shorter distance than he was in the Hawke’s Bay Cup. Da Vinci appears to have lost his dash, and General Victory would have to improve to have a chance. Castlebrae was allowed to miss his first-day engagement but there is nothing wrong with him, and his form at the Trentham summer meeting proved his class. Nakura proved an outstanding performer at Feilding, winning both days, and a characteristic of his performances was his splendid finishing run from an almost hopeless position. Livre d’Or was a winner at Aw’apuni and in spite of subsequent defeats he will have to be respected. Newsboy, a winner at the Wairarapa meeting, will have the advantage of a torrent of early speed, and he will take some catching. Fleetwood was also a winner at Carterton and a horse of his calibre cannot be lightly passed over. There are others engaged that will have to be considered, including In Front, who was responsible for a sensational performance at Trentham last year. Nakura, Solimbine and Newsboy may be selected as a likely trio. The field for the Hastings Hack Cup also includes some newcomers likely to battle it out with the first-day placed horses. Bursar, Atomic Energy and Survivor. Coromandel is a promising sort who should hold his own in open company, and if Action takes on this field his Cup performance would suggest that he should be in the money.

Bursar’s finishing run in the Heretaunga Hack should ensure his being chosen in preference to Action and Coromandel. All the supporting events have filled well, with provision made for divisions in the Juvenile Handicap. Strong support may be forthcoming for the following:— Karamu Hurdles—Omaio, Mesalliance, Lord Holland. Twyford Hack Handicap.—Royal Briton, Lay By, Belle Bleue.
