AFFORESTATION SCHEME IS FAVOURED BY GOVT.

The Government was in favour of Wanganui’s desire to establish an afforestation project on coastal sand country, according to the Minister of Lands and Forests (Mr Corbett), replying to a deputaion from the Wanganui City Council which waited on him in Wellington yesterday. The land in question is an area of from 700 to 1000 acres of coastal lands extending from the mouth of the Kaitoke Stream to the western boundary of the land owned by the Tourist and Development League. Mr Corbett old the deputation that the first step would be to vest the league’s property in the council, who would assume full responsibility to the present bondholders. If it were found impossible to obtain possesion of this area the Government would favourably consider an alternative area, said the Minister. It seemed to him that lhe first job was to take over the existing partly affortstated area and develop it. “I am favourably disposed to all afforestation schemes proposed by local bodies or private concerns,’’ said the Minister. “Such schemes, Io my mind, are much more advantageous than to have all forestry projects tied up in State departments.” The deputation comprised the Mayor (Hon. W. J. Rogers. M.L.C.), Crs R. N. Wilson and N. M. Izard, and the city engineer (Mr L. F. Row).
