PRICE OF SUGAR TO BE INCREASED BY HALF-PENNY A POUND

WELLINGTON, Last Night PA) A n increase of a halfpenny a pound in the retail price of sugar is made by a price order published in tonight’s Gazette. It will become operative when current stocks of sugar are exhausted.

There will also be consequential increases in the price of golden syrup and treacle. It is understood that the basic reason for this advance in sugar prices is an Increase in the price of raw sugar bought under arrangement with the Ministry of Food. No official announcement was available tonight, but the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Bowden) will be making a statement on the advance in price of raw and refined sugar and ancillary commodities. The new maximum retail price sold over the counter for sugar will be 6Jd a pound. If the value of the retail Jot calculated at this price is not an exact number of pence or halfpence, the maximum price for the lot shall be calculated to the nearest upward halfpenny. An extra farthing a pound will be payable if sugar is delivered or the sale is not for cash.
