KREMLIN FEARS THE PEOPLE
NEW YORK, April 19 (Ree. 6 pm).—Mr. Averell Harriman, Ambassador-at-Large, said today that the Kremlin was afraid of the Russian people. Mr. Harriman, who was addressing a Democratic Party dinner, said he and General Eisenhower, in 1945, stood on Lenin’s tomb with Stalin while Russian soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder with fixed bayonets to protect the Premier and his leaders from any attack by the Russian people. Mr. Harriman said he also had seen how the Russian leaders feared the people of the Soviet satellite nations.
“Within Russia the Kremlin is afraid of the people and the people are afraid of the Kremlin,” Mr. Harriman said. He was convinced that, sooner or later, “pressure will begin to operate behind the iron curtain to break down the Kremlin control.”
