DOMINION GOLFERS IN N.S.W. TOURNAMENT
SYDNEY, March 23 (Recd. 10.30 p.m.)—The sensation of the first day’s play in the McWilliams’ Wines 12500 golf tournament at Kensington was the display of the young minor course amateur Harry Berwick, who shocked the top professionals by leading the field with 68, which equals the course record. His record, however, will not be recognised as a special rule today allowed players to wipe the ball on the greens because of the soggy nature of the course after heavy overnight rain. Of four New Zealanders who. entered, A. Murray did best witli 77, which placed him 25th along with nine others.
Leading players at the end of the first round were: H. Berwick (N.S.W.) 68, Cremin (N.S.W.) 69, Dai Rees (Britain) 71, H. Pickworth (Vic.) 71, J. Moran (N.S.W.) 72, W. Bolger (N.S.W.) 72, D. Katterns (Qld.) 72, N. Berwick (N.S.W.) 73, N. von Nida (N.S.W.) 73.
R. H. Glading (N.Z.) returned a card of 79. He was astray with his tee shots and also had bunker trouble. The New ZealaniJ open champion, J. Galloway, took 83. He was definitely off his game and the soggy condition of the course did not suit him. D. L. Woon did not play.
