GOLD RUSH TO VICTORIAN TOWN
MELBOURNE, March 21.—A Gold Rush to the township of Wedderburn, 150 miles from Melbourne, has started following reports of large nuggets having been unearthed in backyard goldmines.
First a grocer, Mr. Albert Smith, found a chunk of gold valued at £llOO, and yesterday another nugget of a similar size was dug up by brothers, Messrs. W. and R. Chapman, from a field owned by their father-in-law, Mr. D. Butterick. Mr. Butterick claims that members of his family have taken £12,000 worth of gold from this paddock during the past year and that every shovelful of earth is now yielding a few pennyweights. Residents are convinced that the nuggets which were found in lumps of quartz, are pieces broken from a gold reef which runs under the main road. Speculators are pouring into the township. Claims have been staked alpng the entire' road through the township and the tents of goldseekers are already appearing on Crown land. Wedderburn owes its existence to a gold boom which reached its peak over 50 years ago.—N.Z.P.A.
