MRS. ROOSEVELT PAYS TRIBUTE TO QUEEN MARY
NEW YORK, March 22 (Recd 7.40 pm).—Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt today praised the "sacrifice and devotion” of Queen Mary in sending her famous needlework carpet to the United States as a dollar-earner. She inspected the carpet at a ceremony arranged by the British Information Service and the English-speaking Union. Mrs. Roosevelt said: “I think it a very wonderful gesture on the part of Queen Mary, who put eight years' work into the carpet. I am sure it meant a considerable wrench to her to give it up to try to earn dollars for her country in its economic crisis. She has shown how greatly determined the women and men of Britain are that Britain shall come back to her former economic position in the world.”
