INQUIRY INTO THE STRANDING OF THE BATTLESHIP MISSOURI

NEW YORK, Feb. 6 (Reed. 6 p.m.) The officers of the battleship Missouri were in doubt about the harbour buoy marking before the battleship lan aground on January 17, her operations officer testified today.

Commander John Millett told a naval board of inquiry tlrat only two buoys marked the safe channel, but the charts used aboard the Missouri showed five buoys. Two were marked in heavy pencil, and three in lighter pencil. Captain William Brown had increased the ship’s speed to 15 knots shortly before the grounding. However, Millett said he understood there was a restriction of five knots in the area. The Missouri was stranded on a mud bank for 15 days.
