SPLENDID FIELDS A FEATURE OF MARTON OPEN SPORTS MEETING

Good fields and good organisation made the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s open sports meeting at Marton Park on Saturday night a success. Public patronage, however, was again disappointing. Visiting competitors, who came from as far afield as Levin, did not return home empty handed, collecting most of the prizes, although Marton competitors registered some good performances. Pi'obably none was better than the effort of the locai young harrier, David Robertson, who won both the 880 and one mile flat events. The previous week he won n distance event at Taihape. V. Stantiall, the Marton Athletic Football Club’s flyer, gained second place in the men's 440 yards and a third in the sprint. Some good racing was seen in the cycling events, the fields being of good proportions. There was only one mishap and that was not serious. The weather, unfortunately, was not of the best. A heavy shower earl} in the evening scattered the crowd and left the track greasy. The rain did not last long and the programme was not interfered with.

The club president, Mr. A. S. Blackledge. at the conclusion of the meeting, thanked the competitors and supporters for their attendance.

In the following results, initials after competitors' names indicate their clubs as shown: (L) Levin, (O) Ohakea, (F) Feilding, (W) Wanganui, (M) Marton, (B) Bulls, (T) Taihape. LOCAL MOTOR-CYCIAST RIDES WELL AT HAMILTON.

Competing in the junior 70 miles open motor-cycle road race at Hamilton at the week-end, a promising young Marton cyclist, M. Follett, finished in third place. He was riding a 350 c.c. B.S.A. machine. In view of the fact that the select field of 26 riders came from all parts of New Zealand and included three Australian competitors, Follett’s performance was a very creditable one, especially in view of, the fact that this was his 'first essay in open company. It was a scratch race and Follett's time was Ihr. 31min. 45 l-ssec., compared with the winner's’ (J. Dale, Auckland), time of Ihr. 21min. Dale is an experienced motor-cyclist and recently won the junior race at Fordell. Follett is a member of the Rangitikei Motor Club and shows promise of developing into a top-notch motorcyclist.

MARTON FREE KINDERGARTEN NOW TO OPEN IN MARCH. Although it was originally intended to open the Marton Free Kindergarten early in February, delays over the holiday period and the inability to procure tradesmen to carry out the extensive renovations to the Salvation Army Hall has caused the postponement of the opening date to midMarch. Mrs. D. Collier, formerly of Greymouth, lias been appointed kindergarten director. Three applications have been received for the position of assistant, who has yet to be appointed. Mrs. Collier has been associated with kindergartens both as a director and a committee secretary in the South Island. The Marton committee has already spent about £lOO in the purchase of equipment, including tables, chairs, and toys. The work still to be carried out includes the provision of conveniences and a hot water service. Explaining details of how the kindergarten will be conducted, the secretary of the local committee, Mr. V. E. Frost, said that Government regulations provided for five morning sessions, each of about three hours a week, and two afternoon sessions of three hours, with one additional afternoon set aside for parents’ activities. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE NOTES. (By “Splint”). Although parades have not been held during the holidays, members of both senior divisions have been busy carrying out attendance at functions. Written applications from organisations for our members to attend a function, immediately become the brigade’s obligation, and if possible, arrangements are made to have the necessary members attend. It is the object of St. John to have trained men and women ready for first aid service, but the members never encroach on any function unless they have been asked to attend. Naturally, their service is available at any time, but it has to be on a business footing as each function attended is recorded in the secretarial books. The committee of St. John in Marton will meet next Monday at 7.45 p.m. in Victory Hall. As this will be the final meeting prior to the annual general meeting, a full attendance is requested. Nursing cadet parades will not begin until March 6. The annual returns of all divisions have now been forwarded to the centre, and a resume of the local work will be recorded In the annual reports. Greetings to local members have been forwarded from the Wellington Priory and Mr. F. Ward personally. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. The first sitting of the Marton Magistrate’s Court for 1950 will be held this morning, when Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., of Feilding, will preside. Most of the cases to come before the magistrate this morning deal with breaches of the traffic regulations. This is the first time a magistrate has presided at a local court sitting since November 29, two Justices of the Peace being on the Bench when the ordinary fortnightly sitting was held on December 14. , Today will be Mr. Coleman’s last visit to Marton until March 1. Justices will preside when the next sitting is held on February 15.

CHILDREN’S PARTY AT RATA. Under the auspices of the RataPutorino branch of the W.D.F.F., a children’s party will be held in the Rata Hall on Saturday, February 11, commencing at 2 p.m. An official of the branch explained last evening that the party was for members’ children only. The meeting of the branch to have been held tomorrow (Thursday) has now been cancelled.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC. Moana Roa, a small beach resort near the mouth of Rangitikei River, has been selected as the spot for the annual picnic for the Marton Methodist Sunday School pupils this year. The picnic is to be held on Saturday and the organisers have issued a cordial invitation to all scholars, parents. and friends to be present. For those Who require transport a bus will leave the Sunday School at 10 a.m. and will return at 5 p.m. PERSONAL. Miss Doris Robertson, Wellington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Robertson, Crofton Road, Marton, has passed her State final nursing examination, with honours in dietetics.
