DEATH OCCURS OF MR. W. R. GREEN; A FORMER COUNCILLOR
The death occurred on Monday of Mr Robert William Green, a former member of the Wanganui City Council. He was in his 85th year.
Mr Green served on the council for two terms, 1905-07 and from 1919 to 1925, a total service of eight years. During the second term Mr Green acted as chairman of the Tramway Committee, in which capacity he was untiring in the work done for the department. He had been in retirement for several years, but always took the liveliest interest in the city’s welfare. As a businessman he was successful, and in partnership with others founded the timber milling business of Messrs Green, McLean and Beaven in Ridgway Street. Mr Green was a keen bowler and a valued member of the St. John’s Bowling Club. Last night at the City Council meeting the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., paid a tribute to his memory. As a mark of respect the council observed a brief silence.
