Earthquake In Persian Gulf; Death Roll Mounts To 1500
LONDON, Jan. 30 (Rec. 10.35 pm).—The deathroll caused by an earthquake which destroyed 20 villages in the Persian Gulf region is now reported to be more than 1500.
Reuter’s Teheran correspondent says medical and rescue. parties are today pushing 1 through heavy snow into the I earthquake devastated area, near ■ Bushire.
A Government spokesman said the military authorities would attempt, to supply food and clothing by air today to some of the 20 villages reported to be engulfed. Heavy snow has disrupted com-
munications and hampered the relief measures. Relief supplies will he sent to the area in army aircraft later today. The earthquake occurred on January 25, hut all roads were blocked and it took four days for a district officer to walk from Kangan to Bushire with the news.
The Persian Red Lion and Sun Society (the equivalent of the Red Cross) is rushing aid to the stricken area from Bushire and Shiraz, about 140 miles inland.
