Britain’s Butchers Call Off “Cold War”

LONDON, Jan. 29. Britain’s butchers tonight temporarily called off their cold war with the Food Ministry. They decided to accept for a few weeks the Government decision to Increase the surcharge on meat from 2d in the £ to 9d in the £. They said, however, that they would insist on an independent inquiry later into the whole question. The Food Ministry contends that the increased levy will reduce distribution costs, and that butchers would not suffer, because they will handle more meat under the new ration increase.

Butchers’ representatives announced after their meeting tonight that because “chaotic conditions would result.” they had decided not to boycott meat.
