MANY SEEDED PLAYERS BEATEN IN CANTERBURY TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night (PA). —-Five of the eight seeded players were beaten in the women’s singles event when the Canterbury lawn tennis championships were continued today. Miss E. Attwood (first seeded player) who was beaten by Miss M. Beverley (sixth) 4-6. 6-3, 1-6; Miss .M. Kerr * (third) beaten by Miss M. Robertson 2-6, 5-7; Mrs E. Anderson (fifth) also beaten by Miss Robertson in the second round, 6-8, 6-3, 0-6: Mrs. H. Lane (seventh) beaten by Miss V. Johnson r (unseeded) in the second round, 2-6, 5-7; and Miss I. Adam (eighth) beaten by Miss H. Redwood (unseeded) in the second round, 9-11, 4-6. In the men’s singles the only upset was the defeat of L. Roach (eighth' by A. N. Bailey (unseeded), 1-6, 1-6, in the third round. The following will play in the semifinals tomorrow: — Men’s Singles: J. E. Robson and O. M. Bold, R. G. Pattinson and R. S. McKenzie; doubles: McKenzies and Robson and R. A. Howe and Pattinson. and the winners of the match between R. S. Burns and J. A. Barry and O. M. Bold and M. E. Otway; women’s singles: Misses Robertson and Beverley. Misses J. Mac Gibbon and B. Potter; women’s doubles: Mrs. I. Hatherly and Miss T. Poole, and Misses Kerr and Potter. Mrs. Anderson and Beverley, and Miss Robertson and Miss Mac Gibbon. The semi-finals of the combined doubles have not yet been reached.
