Mathematics To Be Of Use To Farmers
WELLINGTON, Yesterday (PA).— Switching from atomic to mathematical specialisation because he thought there was more direct application for the latter in New Zealand, Dr. R. M. Williams, who arrived from England today in the Akaroa to take up duties at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Re-
search, believes that mathematics can be of the greatest help to New Zealand farmers. Until 1945 Dr. Williams was working on atomic projects in the United States, and thereafter was engaged in mathematical research at. t Cambridge University. He said that, atomic isotopes in the medical and agricultural fields could be of great, value in tracing diseases and nutritional problems connected with farming. In normal agricultural matters, he said, mathematics could greatly reduce the cost of experiments.
