Coal Without Coalmines
LONDON. —Britain is to attempt to produce gas direct from her coal seams without mining. Apparatus for the experiment is being built at an opencast working at Newman Spinney, Derbyshire, Two vertical four-inch bore holes will reach the seam which will then be ignited along the face by a thermite bomb. Compressed air pumped to the fire will control its spread and the quality of the gas drawn off from a second borehole vent. This is the first experiment of its kind in this country although similar schemes have been tried in Belgium and the United States for the last three years, and in Russia for considerably longer. According to American and Belgian engineers "experienmts have been interesting but inconclusive,” but Russia claims that she has been operating in this manner successfully since before the beginning of the last war.—Reuter
