Three-Year-Old Beaumaris May Be Monday's Favourite For £19,000 Auckland Cup

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special).—The stage at Ellerslie is set for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s four-day summer carnival on Monday, but what the weather conditions will be like remains to be seen. However, it appears certain that the three-year-old colt Beaumaris will be one of the favourites for the rich Auckland Cup.

Of course, though the five-fig-ure stake makes the Auckland Cup the outstanding event, there arc other events on the programme which will also make a strong appeal. These include the second “leg” of the double, the Railway Handicap, the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and the glorified “hack” raee, the Queen’s Plate. History is against a three-year-old in the Auckland Cup. At any rate, one of that age has not won in the last half-century. Yet Beaumaris has ruled as one of the favourites ever since the nominations appeared, and another fancied candidate is the New Zealand Oaks winner Sweet Spray. She would have to make history, for a three-year-old filly has not won in ’the 75 years' history of the Cup. Opposition to these two outstanding three-year-olds is strong, for Conspiracy, Lord Manna, Mountain Glory, Quick March, Swanee, Blue Seal, Wonder Boy and Vice-Chancellor are handicappers of the best class, and included among those who have come up from hack ranks is Calibrate. Should there be a change in the weather, with a wet track, anything might happen, and a good many soundly-formed opinions may be toppled. However, present indications are that Beaumaris, Vice-Chancellor and Lord Manna will be a likely trio on Monday. Most of the “tops” in sprinting calibre are engaged in the Railwaey Handicap, with Da Vinci occupying the post of honour. He is of such a high class that he cannot be left out of calculations, but the form of re,cent winners in Faultina, Travel King, Rizzio, Super Vaals, Swayup Morocco and Chatril entitles theriVto support. There are others with good credentials in the field capable of springing a surprise. The best of the youngsters figure in the Great Northern Foal Stakes and the result should be a definite indication as to the leading juvenile. Out-1 standing aspirants for the title include Aden, Classowa, Loder, Mainbrace, Sea Wolf, Correspond, The Unicorn, Pastel and Personage. That the supporting events have been well supported is evident from the fact that three divisions will be necessary in the Robinson Handicap, the hack seven, and the five.-furlong ■Nursery Handicap, with two divisions in the Queen's Plate. . Eight horses were balloted out of the Auckland Cup, but scratchings, including inose of Rosslare, Voltaic and Hunting Rua, have enabled some of them to be reinstated. Horses in likely form for Monday include:— Robinson Handicap. First division: Resolute, Roiata. Second division: Manon, Seven Up. Third division: Count Blan, Superior Scholar.
