Commonwealth May Be Asked Opinion On Council Of Europe
LONDON, Dec. 22 (Recd. 10pm).— The British Commonwealth Governments may be asked to define their attitude to Britain’s present and future participation in the Council of Europe, says Reuter's Strasbourg!! correspondent.
The General Affairs Commission of the European Consultative Assembly decided last night to ask the Assembly’s President (Mr. Spaak) to approach Britain on the subject. The Commission suggested that Britain should call the talks between Commonwealth and the Council of Europe representatives. A British Cabinet, member, Mr. Hugh Dalton, said Britain’s attitude to the Council of Europe was not dependent on the Commonwealth, but the suggested talks showed respect of the Council s British members for the Commonwealth opinion.
