South Africa And The Disposal Of Protectorate Of Bechuanaland

CAPETOWN, Dec. 22 (Recd. 6 pm). —The South African Prime Minister, Dr. Malan, in a statement last night, expressed surprise at a recent announcement that British and Southern Rhodesian Ministers had agreed that in any change in the status of Bechuanaland protectorate, Southern Rhodesia’s viewpoint concerning the territory would be taken fully into consideration.

Dr. Malan said the statement appeared to indicate that Southern Rhodesia was claiming co-partnership i n the future disposal of the protectorate, and in possible annexation of part of it. If so, he would like to point out, “in all politeness. ’ that under the Anglo-South Africa Agreement of 1909. the disposal of the protectorates (Bechuanaland, Swaziland and Basutoland) was a matter exclusively and solely between Britain and South Africa. “In the circumstances, it must be regarded as surprising that such a statement should have been issued without any prior consultation with, or even notice to, the Union Government.”
