Broadway Will Be Closed To Vehicular Traffic This Evening

As has been the custom in previous years, Broadway, between Follett Street and High Street, Marton, will be closed to all vehicular traffic tonight (Christmas Eve) from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. During these hours pedestrians will have full use of the roadway without being hindered by a stream of cars passing through the busy thoroughfare. A fine evening should bring crowds into town tonight for the final shopping flutter before the shops close for four days’ holiday. Throughout the week Broadway has presented an animated scene and this evening will probably see further bustling as lastminute gift-seekers jostle for positions at the various shop counters. Christmas Eve at the height of the festivities, is usually a gay scene with streamers and confetti, littering the streets, squeakers, crackers, whistles, musical instruments, in fact, anything that makes a noise, will no doubt be paraded through Broadway tonight to the accompaniment of laughter, singing and shouting. Marton shop-keepers appear to have spent considerable time this year in festive window displays and shop dressing. There is scarcely a shop in Broadway, big or small, that has not made a special effort to provide an attractive and seasonal display. Shops will close at 10 o’clock tonight and will not re-open until Wednesday morning. .MARTON KINDERGARTEN MAY OPEN IN FEBRUARY. Providing a trained director and an assistant are available the Marton Free Kindergarten Association will be in a position to open its proposed kin-» dergarten in the Salvation Army Hall in F ebruary. The building has been approved by the Education Board’s senior inspector for a roll of 30 children. The premises obtained are only temporary and the association is still striving to acquire its own permanent building. By renting the Salvation Army Hall, however, the association hopes to commence activities at an earlier date than at first thought possible. Alterations will be necessary to the hall and include the installation of conveniences, a hot water supply and sink, tables and chairs, toys and a piano. The vacant section adjacent to the hall will be used as a playing area. The Kindergarten Association had about £2OO in hand at the present time, but much of the expenditure for approved equipment will carry a Government subsidy. MARTON DEPOT SELECTED FOR ROAD SERVICE BUSES. The New Zealand Railway Road Services have selected Messrs. C. H. Campbell Ltd., North Broadway, as the Marton depot when the buses are diverted through Marton from Monday, January 23. A representative of.the Railways Department recently visited Marton to confer with borough councillors and the traffic officer to discuss the question of a suitable booking office and depot. The premises of Messrs. Campbell Ltd., are at present being altered and modernised and as they possess the best available appointments it was for this reason that they were selected as the new depot for Marton. The proposed deviation is to be by way of Crofton Road and Calico Line. Although this route is not the shortest, it is a tar-sealed highway and ensures the greatest travelling comfort. Adjustments to the time-table wifi provide for making up the extra time entailed by the deviation, such as reducing the waiting time at refreshment stops. PERSONAL. Miss Alison Forester, daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Forester, Station Road, Marton, has gained her M.A. degree in English, with first-class honours, at the Auckland University. Miss Forster has now accepted a lectureship at the University. RUBBISH FIRE. The Marton Fire Brigade received a call to a rubbish fire at the rear of premises in Broadway on Wednesday night. The blaze was extinguished before any damage was caused. The call was received while brigade members were holding their final meeting of the year and within seconds there was a complete turnout of uniformed firemen.
