Auckland Cyclist May Be Selected For Empire Games
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— A New Zealand cycling representative at the world championships last year, W. A. Stonex, of Auckland, is likely to be adaed to the New Zealand team for the Empire Games as a result of races staged by the Auckland Centre tonight. Stonex defeated M. L. Stewart, former national champion, in two heats of the 1000 metres match race. He won the first heat by a wheel in 13.6 sec for the final furlong. In the second heat the margin was half a length and the time 13.2 sec. The races were staged at the request of the New Zealand selectors following the national championship carnival last week.
A national junior record was made in the paced five miles event by J. L. Anderson, who beat C. M. Simpson's record, made on Saturday, by nearly two seconds. Anderson and B. G. Grant broke from the field of 12 riders and rode brilliantly in setting the time of lOmin. 15.4 sec. Simpson’s time was lOmin. 17.1 sec.
