WANGANUI Y.W.C.A. END-OF-YEAR PARTIES
A festive round of Christmas and social gatherings concluded the activities for the year of clubs in the Wanganui Y.W.C.A. Officials and the Y.W.C.A. secretary, Miss E. M. Jebson were the recipients of gifts at several functions. A Christmas tree and gay decorations in the gymnasium were a feature of the party held by members of the primary girls’ club, who enjoyed games, competitions and singing of carols and a sit-down supper. The club president and Miss Jebson received bouquets of flowers. A similar programme was carried out by the secondary girls' club. Successful Christmas parties for children were held by • the young married women's groups and the 20th. Century and Golden Circle Clubs in the gymnasium with a visit from Father Christmas, who presented gifts from a tree.
Mrs. F. Rule, president of the 20th. Century Club, was hostess at a combined social and dance held for the benefit of members and their husbands. A “beetle drive” and games were interspersed with dancing. Another social evening was held at the home of Mrs. B. L. Gillies, by the Golden Circle Club, of Aramoho. The The president, Mrs. F. C. Alexander, cut the Christmas cake. The final meeting of the Business Girls’ Lyceum took the form of a dinner party at the Grand Hotel, then a picture party followed by supper at the home of Mrs. V. Jones, when pportunity was taken to present the president, Miss C. Alexander, with a gift in acknowledgment of her services to the club. _ Everygirls’ Club, for younger business girls, spent a pleasant evening at the home of Miss A. H. Cole, where they heard “talkie” records, specially recorded for blind people. They also listened to the story of her life in Latvia and as a displaced person in Germany told by Mrs. Poskus, now residing in Wanganui. At the Play Centre's afternoon tea gathering, a presentation of a weekand bag and flowers was made to the voluntary organiser, Mrs. Roger Nelson, who was thanked on behalf of the association by Mrs. R. N. Wilson, 'who also mentioned Mrs. Nelson’s assistants, Mesdames J. Barwick and Barrett, who received small gifts.
At a musical evening for international funds held at the home of Mrs. R. N. Wilson, president Qf the women’s committee of the Y.W.C.A., items were given by a musical group which meets there during the year.. The programme comprised songs by Mr and Mrs J. D. Tizard, Mrs G. W. Perrett, Mrs. P. J. Palmer, Miss Gwynn, Miss Isobel Dunlop and Mrs. Lee, elocution by Mrs. T. L. Sperring, vocal duets, Mrs. R. N. Wilson and Mrs A. Douglass and pianoforte solos, Miss Hunger. Accompanists were Mesdames W. G. Cooper, Douglas and Wilson. Carol and community singing were enjoyed and Mr, Wilson told a number of amusing anecdotes of his experiences as a school teacher. Mrs. Wilson was the recipient of a sheaf of flowers from the musical group. The association will formally resume its activities again in March with the customary “Open Night.” It is intended, however, to hold a large garden party in February -for the funds of the Y.W.C.A. to assist in its new status as a separate organisation from the Y.M.C.A., which begins in the new year.
