TRIAL OF NAZI VON MANSTEIN NEARS ITS END
LONDON, Dec. 12 (Recd. 6 pm).— The summing-up in the three-months-old war crimes trial of the Nazi FieldMarshal, Erich von Manstein, will begin today, states Reuters Hamburg correspondent.
The Judge is Mr. Justice J. A. Collingwood. The summing-up is expected to take three or four days owing to the complexity of the arguments raised and the mass of evidence. The verdict of the British Court is not expected until a few days before Christmas.
Due to the care he had received at a British military hospital here, 62-year» old Manstein, accused of atrocities during the Polish and Russian campaign, is in good physical shape. He has been under the care of British medical officers for over a year. Manstein occupies a suite consisting of a bedroom, private lounge and bathroom in a hospital His wife visits him every day and besides normal British Army rations he gets stout and a daily tot of whisky. The trial began on August 23, when Judge Collingwood started to read an indictment of 17 charges filling 39 closely typed foolscap pages.
