HARBOUR REVENUE LAST YEAR WAS LOWER THAN ANTICIPATED

“Our revenue for the year ended September 30, 1949, was not as good as anticipated due to the lack of dredging, but even with the hired dredge we had at Castlecliff for two months, it has been proved that ships are prepared to make greater use of Castlecliff if the conditions are available,” said the chairman (Mr. E. A. Millward) at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board. Mr. Millward said that the financial statement for November would show that the receipts for the months of October and November had increased by £2363 compared with the same period of last year and that the expenditure had been reduced by £3400. The latter amount, however, would be off-set by the final payment for dredge hire, the account for which was not yet to hand.

Appreciation was voiced by Mr. Millward of the assistance received during the year by the board from the Ministry of Works and Its Wanganui representative (Mr. G. W. Sampson), and to the Marine Department and the Treasury. “Although we did not receive the amount of assistance we anticipated for the South Spit repairs, I must say the Government assisted us substantially for this work. We thank the Government for this aid and lhe helpful advice we have received from the various departments.”

Mr. Millward paid tribute to the work of the managing secretary (Mr. I. Redditch) and his staff.
