Mr. A. F. McMurtrie, retiring As-sistant-Director of Education, will be given a complimentary luncheon by the Wanganui Education Board at tiie Grand Hotel next Tuesday. C'r. T. N. Dickson has been appointed to represent the Wanganui City Council on the interim investigation committee set up to go into the question of purchasing the home af the late Mr Hope Gibbons at Wanganui East as a home for aged people. Mr. E. C. R. Warr, of Asniurton, has been appointed to the teaching staff of the Wanganui Technical College as physical education specialist in place of Mr, C. J. Keats. Mr. T. N. Worthington, of Ohakune, who will teach general subjects has also been appointed to the staff of the college.
Mr Foss Shannon, Deputy Secretary of External Affairs, arrived at Auckland by Pan American Clipper from the United States yesterday afternoon. He has been attending a session of the United Nations Gene il Assembly in New York as repres.atative of New Zealand. Mr. Shannon, who is also Secretary to Cabinet, left for Wellington by train last night.—(P.A.). Mr. Stanley Porter, of Roseneath, Wellington, was recently presenteti with the gold star badge, the highest award for service of the New Zealand Returned Services' Association. The award, “for 20 years’ faithful, continuous and valuable service to the R.5.A.,” was made by the Dominion president of the organisation, Sir Howard Kippenberger. Since 1918 there has been between 180,000 and 200,000 members of the R.S.A. Of that number, the gold star badge has been awarded to only 198 members.
