Petition To Parliament
Sir,—The debate of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce council on the petition to Parliament for a public inquiry into the affairs of the Wanganui Harbour Board suggests that the majority of its members do not believe in the British Constitution, for they must he aware that it is a valued prerogative of the people to petition the King or Parliament, yet they object to this petition. Some of the members condemn pressure groups,, My committee heartily endorses this attitude A decent representative of the people will not submit to such
groups. Now every elector in the harbour rating area is being given an opportunity to sign this petition. That does not look like the methods of a pressure group, does it Let the people, including the members of the Chamber of Commerce, please themselves whether they sign or not. Then let Parliament decide whether to grant the petition or not. Unprejudiced people will see nothing wrong with that.—l am, etc. R. O. Q, MARKS, Hon. Secretary, Civic Committee on Wanganui Harbour Affairs.
