About 800 acres of potatoes have been planted in the Rangitikei district this season, this being about the same as last year. Crops are looking healthy but an estimate of the yield will not be available until nearer the end of the year, as early digging does not normally start irt the district until mid-Dc-cember ( The Rangitikei acreage in wheat is likely to increase by about 50 per cent, this year, and it is estimated that 3000 acres will be harvested. The light demand for barley this season is a contributing factor for many farmers and to wheat Although some winter sown crop's have developed rust, favourable weather this season, has brought other crops on well and a good yield is likely. According to a merchant, there has been a big carry over of barley from last season, resulting from lessenen demand for jstock foods during the mild winter , and ihe availanility of Australian wheat for poultry. He estimated that only a quartet of last year’s barley acreage was being grown in Rangitike.l this season. ROTARY CLUB. The Marton Rotary Club this week was addressed by Mr. H. Murray Reid, engineer to the Rangitikei County Council a nd the Rangitikei Catchment Board. Mr. Reid, who commanded n field company of engineers in the Western Desert during the last war, spoke of his experiences while a pris oner of war in a German hospital, stressing the impartial treatment give,, by the German hospital staff to hot!.
