N.Z. Tennis Team Has Win Over Sydney Varsity
SYDNEY, Nov. 9 (Recd. 9.40 p.m.) —The New Zealand women’s tennis team today defeated the Sydney University team in a match played on the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association courts at White City. The New Zealand girls, after two games here on hard courts, appreciated the return to grass and outclassed the university team to win by 12 sets to nil. All the New Zealanders need more hard play to bring them to their best. Only Misses Potter and Attwood are playing the type of tennis that is likely to trouble the local girls next week in the match against N.S.W. and in the State championships. In today's match Miss Potter showed splendid form, being severe with all her shots, particularly overhead. Her partner, Miss Kerr, still handicapped by tennis elbow, nevertheless played well. Miss Attwood drove confidently and well and was superb on the smash. Miss Macgibbon played some good tennis but was Erratic. The juniors, Misses Bourke and Becroft, spoilt an otherwise sound display by faulty work at the net, missing some fast volleys and smashes. Results were as follow, New Zealanders being mentioned first: Misses Bourke and Becroft beat Misses J. Hughes and J. Howell 6-1, 6-1; Misses Potter and Kerr beat Misses J. Martin and P. Veech 9-7, 7-5; Misses Attwood and Macgibbon beat Misses J. White and J. King 6-1, 6-3; Misses Bourke and Becroft beat Misses Martin and Veech 6-4, 6-1: Misses Potter and Kerr beat Misses White and King 6-3, 6-3: Miss Attwood and Macgibbon beat Misses Hughes and Howell 6-0, 6-1.
