Wanganui County Roads
The reconstruction and metalling contract between Deniair and Kauangaroa should be completed by the end of the month and it is anticipat id that tfie road will be consolidated sufficiently to complete the sealing before the end of March, the engineer (MrR. R. Dawson) reported to yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui County Council. The engineer stated that it had been found necessary to make repairs to the foundations of the land spans of the Mangawhero bridge. The main spans consist of hardwood trusses with totara stringers and joists, the whole of which is supported by totara piers. Th e totara supports under the land spans were found to be in a very advanced state of decay under the surface of the ground. Fortunately the piers supporting the main span are in reasonably saf e condition, although strengthening work may be required in the near future. Slips of a minor nature would be removed on the Mangawhero Road, stated the engineer, and general repairs would be made on the t< r end of the road within a few weeks prior to the completion of the metalling contract. Aranui Bluff, on the Whangaehu Valley Road, will be surfaced with metal and metal repairs will be made in a few days, while the metalling plant is in the vicinity. In the Upper Whangaehu area, all slips have been cleared between Mount View and Col- ‘ lier's Bridge and metal repairs will be made at the first opportunity. Th e Wanganui River roads were generally in good order, stated the engineer. Minor repairs were to be nrjde on the Morikau and Otaranoho Roads. The Kaiwhaiki Road has been improved by widening and metalling over the hill.
