LEVIN CANDIDATES IN TRENTHAM TRIALS
WELLINGTON, Last Night (Spec.) —More than 20 horses from Trentham are booked to race at the Levin meeting on Saturday, but the final trials this morning did not shed much light on their prospects. The novice Earl King returned the best figures over half a mile. Others to sprint usefully were Gay John, Autocrat, His Nibs, and. Jolly Sailor, i'he trial grass and the two-year-old track were available for galloping, the going being in good order in spite of overnight rain. On the trial grass, Gay John (Biggs) easily beat Fortune (Spratt! and Melite (McDonald) over half a mile in 50 4-ssec. Gay John may be suited by the distance in the Hokio Hack Handicap on Saturday. Wild Note (McDonald) finished six lengths ahead of Deep Sea (Spratt) over a mile in 1.47 1-5, the last half taking 54 4-sesc. The former’s good showing on the final day oi the Wellington meeting indicated an early return to form. The Wild Chase gelding is to contest the New Zealand Cup Trial at Levin on Saturday, but may find the distance troublesome at this stage. Fighting Fox (Spratt) finished too well for Belle Rein" (McDonald) over seven furlongs, and beat his stablemate by four lengths in 1.33 2-5, after running the last four in 52 l-ssec. Fighting Fox went h useful race for fifth on the final day of the Wellington meeting, and locks a likely improver for Levin. Balcherrie (Page) was not troubled to run home the last half-mile of his work in 53 2-5. Oban (S. Bryce) and Zealander (W. Bryce) finished on terms over half a mile in 51 2-ssec. King of Quiz (Biggs) was timed to run the last three of seven furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Angell (S. Bryce) was finishing well at the end- of half a mile in 51 2-ssec., the last three furlongs in 37 sec. She should make her presence felt in the Highwclgnt Handicap at Levin. The Rip (.Walker) covered seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5, the last four in 52 l-ssec. His Nibs (Kelly) was sent over six furlongs, being assisted over the last four by Jolly Sailor (Ford) in 50 3-5 sec. The former is a lazy worker but he looks in great order and may be one of the hardest to beat in the sprint on Saturday. Earl King (Carlin) took the honours when he ree'ed off half a mile in 49 4-ssec. The Balloch three-year-old has bled in his last couple .of starts, but if he doe’s not suffer a recurrence he should take a hand in the finish of the first division of the Maiden Race at Levin. On the two-year-oid track, Apex (Walker) worked in dashing style to beat Billie Girl (Biggs) easily by a couple of lengths over three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. The former, who has thrived on his racing, will have his next start in the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes at Riccarton. Autocrat (S. Bryce) pleased by the manner in which he sprinted home the last half-mile of his work in 50 Rambler (Ford) was well clear of Baadin (Walker) at the conclusion of half a mile in 54 2-ssec. Pierre (Biggs) and Rising Tide (Walker) both had plenty in reserve at the end of their half-mile in 54 4-ssec. Pictagain (Taylor) was too good for Super Duke (S. Bryce) over half a mile, finishing a length to the good in 51 l-ssec. Hazaan (Gallagher) impressed more than Pictawin (Taylor) over three furlongs in 38sec.
