MR. SEMPLE’S RECEPTION OF OHAKUNE DEPUTATION CAUSES DISPLEASURE
OHAKUNE, Last Night (OC).—Displeasure at the reception accorded by the Minister of Works, M'r Semple, to a deputation backed by the Ohakune Chamber of Commerce and the Ohakune Borough Council was expressed at a meeting of the chamber when the president, Mr M. S. Gould, reported on the matter.
The purpose of the deputation was to discuss with Mr Semple the construction of a road up the southern slopes of Mount Ruapehu to Blyth Hut.
Mr Gould said the reception that the deputation received was “very cool indeed.” He ' noted Mr Semple as saying that he *.dn’t give a damn” for the people of Ohakune. Mr P. Kearins, M.P. for Waimarino, had been written to and acquainted with the facts, said Mr Gould, but no reply had yet been leceived from him. Mr F. A. Martin said he thought the matter should be fully discussed at the next, meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council. His suggestion that Wellington tramping clubs should be asked for their opinions about the road was adopted by the chamber.
Southern Cargoes. Shipments of general cargo from Dunedin have been arriving at Wanganui more regularly within recent weeks. The Port Waikato was at Castlecliff at the end of last week, from Dunedin and Oamaru, and was followed on Tuesday by the Breeze, also from Dunedin. ' The Breeze continued discharge at Cast'ecliff yesterday and was to have sailed last evening for Lyttelton and Timaru Ex* pected tomorrow is the Storm. The vessel is bringing general cargo from Lvttelton via Wellington, a nd after discharge goes to Lyttelton for her annual overhaul and survey.
