Melbourne Cup Victory Of Foxzami Another Triumph For New Zealand Breeders

(By

“KESTREL”)

Even if New Zealand owners did not add to their already creditable record of Melbourne Cup winners, the victory of Eoxzami in the rich Flemington two-milc race yesterday was a triumph for the thoroughbred industry in the Dominion, for the winner was bred in New Zealand, though lie is owned in Australia. Foxzami is the second Mel-1"

bourne Cup winner to be sired by the Firdaussi horse Nizami, who a couple of years ago was purchased by the leading Australian owner and breeder. Jlr. F. AV. Hughes, for whom Hiraji. a son of Nizami, won (he .1947 Melbourne Cup. At the 1947 yearling sales at Trentham Foxzami was one of a consignment of 16 yearlings submitted on behalf of the Trelawney Stud, Cambridge ten of which reached fourligure prices. One, by Foxbridge from Konneta, realised 3000gns, and another, by Foxbridge from Lalla Quex, went for 225)gns, but the Niz-anii-Honeywood colt was allowed to go at 800gns to the bid of Mr L G. Robinson of Sydney. Little did intending purchasers at the ringside realise that a Melbourne Cup winner was being allowed to change hands at a bargain price, just as Hiraji had a couple of years earlier. Foxzami is bred on the same lines as Hiraji, being by Nizami from a Foxbridge mare, Honey wood, who was out of Air Lassie, by Romeo from Air Queen, by Flying King from Vargas, by Cylgad. Foxzami is a threequarter brother in blood to Mumtazi, a winner in Australia, but he has made a name for himself by winning the Hotham Handicap last Saturday and following that up with his triumph in the Melbourne Cup. New Zealand breeders fnay well be proud of the continued success by Dominion-bred horses in important | Australian races, among them being, the ill-fated Count Cyrano’s win in i the Metropolitan at Randwick last month, and Sage King’s runaway vic- I tory in the concluding event at Flem- | ington yesterday. Such wins must give a fillip to the yearling sales at' Trentham.
