WANGANUI LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION WANTS ITS OWN COURTS

The management committee of the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association will approach the Wanganui City Council with the view to the council [reserving a site for the establishment of association tennis courts. [ This was decided at. the annual meeting last night after delegates had suggested the need for association courts .It was pointed out that the associations have wanted their own courts for a number of years and a fund for this work had been established. As suitable sections were becoming less available in the city area it was thought that something definite had to be done in the near future. Enough courts would be needed so as to be able to stage a major tournament. The Wellington City Council had co-operated with the Wellington Association in the establishment, of the association’s courts. Members said that tennis was a sporting activity worthy of financial help from the Wanganui council.

It was recommended to the incoming management, committee, that in view of the forthcoming North Island championships, suitable umpires should be obtained and official examinations proceeded with. There are only two umpires in Wanganui at the present time who have passed the New Zealand Umpires’ Association’s written examinations. They are the Rev. H. W. Austin and Mr T. N. HayCampbell. Other recommendations to the management committee included the awarding of trophies for the residential championships in place of certificates and trophies for A, B and C grade inter-club competitions. The possibility of obtaining an outside tennis coach will be investigated. N. V. Edwards, of Auckland, is not available this season, but Mrs J. McVay had intimated that she might be able to visit Wanganui during November.

The question of providing prominent Wanganui players as coaches for young players in the minor clubs will be investigated by the management committee.

Election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr N. B. Barkman; vicepresidents, Messrs K. Hayhow, B. J. McCarthy, A. Burston, T. F. Latham and the Rev. H. vV. Austin; secretary, Mr P. J. Howie; hon. solicitor, Mr N. R. Bain; hon. auditor, Mr I. L. Robson; management committee, Messrs C. J. F. Aves, A. Larsen, J. Souter, G. Tremain, and G. Bristol; selectors, Messrs A. Larsen, G. Tremain, and T. F. Latham; delegates to the New Zealand Association, Mr W. J. Melody and the Rev. H. W. Austin. As no nominations were received for the position of president and treasurer, the matter will be left in the hands of the management committee and the appointments will be made at a later date. Mr D W. Earle, Last season’s president, and Mr B. J. McCarthy, the treasurer, were not available for re-election.
