CRICKET SEASON TO OPEN IN RANGITIKEI ON OCT. 29

Providing the wickets are in order, the cricket season is to open in Rangitikei on Saturday, October 29. This was decided at the annual meeting of the Rangitikei Cricket Association on Monday night. Club fixtures are to be of two-days duration.

One new club—Sanson —was granted affiliation. It is 12 years since Sanson has played in competition cricket. The Ohakea Air Force intimated that they would be unable to enter a team in this season’s competition. Affiliations were also received from Old Boys, Hunterville, Marton, Porewa, High School and Suburbs. The following officers were elected: —Patron, Mr H. F. Arkwright; president. Mr N V. Rix-Trott; vicepresidents, Messrs G. L. Marshall, J. F. Openshaw, M. M. Marshall, L. J. Thompson and J. M. Grant; treasurer Mr C. A. Tidy; secretary, Mr R. Parkinson; assistant secretary, Mr D. G. McLennan; auditor, Mr D. B. Sladden; committee, Messrs H. F. Arkwright (life member), A. B. Marshall (Porewa), R. Worker (High School). C. L. Wood (Hunterville), W. Sanders (Marton), A. Smith (Suburbs), Warrant Officer C. Hill (Sanson), V. Simcox (Old Boys), B. Klitscher (adfiitional member), and delegates from the Taihape and Ruapehu Sub-associ-ations; resident delegate on N.Z.C.C., Mr J. L. Kerr. It was decided to hold a working bee at the cricket ground on Saturday, October 15, commencing at 1 p.m. Each club is to supply a minimum of nine players. The Suburbs Club was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for offering to paint the pavilion. Management Committee Meeting At a meeting of the management committee following the annual meeting practice nights were allotted as follow:—Marton, Thursdays; Old Boys, Wednesdays, Suburbs, Tuesdays. Messrs B. Klitscher, A. B. Marshall, V. Simcox and W. Sanders were elected a ground committee. Mr J. M. Grant resigned his position on the committee. Tribute was paid to his past services and it was decided to place them on record. The following were appointed a fixtures committee: Messrs M. Mar;hall (Porewa), C. L. Wood (Hunterville) and A. Smith (Suburbs). W. FLOWER SHOW AT RATA

The September meeting of the Rata-Putorino W.D.F.F. took the form of a branch spring flower show. There was a good attendance of members and friends. Entries were good and they were capably judged by Miss Meads and Mrs Aidworth. The resists were;— Three varieties daffodil trumpets, Mrs McKenzie 1, Mrs P. Rhodes 2; 3 varieties, incoms., Mrs H. During the afternoon Mrs Walker gave a demonstration on the making of flowers from materials, suhe as satii), organdi and velvet, and had on display many beautiful specimens. Mrs Walker also gave a most interesting talk on “Hondra.” The competition “naming advertisements” was won oy Mrs Carey. The next meeting of the branch will be held on Wednesday, October 12, and the competition is artificial flowers. SHOOT-OFF FOR HOME GUARD CUP AGAIN ENDS IN TIE The Home Guard Cup competition is still not finalised. In the shoot-off for the trophy on the Marton Miniature Rifle Club range on Monday night the two Trevors (Whale and Taylor) once again finished with equal scores. Another shoot-off will be fired next Monday night, which will be the final night of the season. During the evening three marksmen—T. Taylor, N. Whale and H. Coles—netted “possibles,” while E2 Miller shot one in a make-up shoot. HEALTH STAMP CAMPAIGN OPENS HTiLL IN MARTON The sale of health stamps in Marton cn the opening day of the campaign exceeded last years effort by more than £lOO. In commenting upon this yesterday, the Postmaster, Mr G. E. Mitchell, said the campaign had opened in Marton on a highly satisfactory note. First day sales totalled £344 14s, compared with £240 5s 6d in 1948.
