Rogers, M.L.C., Mayor of Wanganui ,who mentioned the progress which had been made since the stamps Were first sold 21 years ago. Mr. Rogers also paid tribute to the women’s organisations which had assisted in the sale of the stamps from year to year and closed his remarks by wishing the 1949 campaign every success. Today there Was a rush to post first-day covers. Waterworks Loan. Just under 1000 ratepayers will be included in the No. 2 supplementary roll for the poll of ratepayers for the 130,000 water works loan to be taken on October 26 by the Wanganui City Council. The general roll and the No. 1 supplementary roll used for the triennial elections in 1947 has been purged of non-ratepayers, a task involving a considerable amount of work for the council staff. The town clerk, Mr. C. R. White, stated yesterday that there would be 13 polling booths for the poll. The staffing of the polling booths was now under consideration and only the applications of people with experience in booths at civic or general election booths would be considered. Only really competent people were required and naturally, applications would have to be in writing.
