SYLIS RESPONSIBLE FOR SOLID EFFORT TO WIN SOMERS MEMORIAL CUP

I AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special). I—Middle distance races are not often won from end to end, and the supporters of Gollen in the Somers Memorial Cup at Te Aroha last Saturday lost most of their investments when this line looking galloper failed to do just this. He was left in front going out of the straight and nothing went up to him. Pulling a bit, he was willy nilly forced into the role ot pacemaker. That he held on to the lead until 100 yards from the post is evidence of a good performance. The winner turned up in Sylis, Auckland Cup winner in 1946. There was real merit in his effort, for he was squeezed back a bit at the start. He got over to the rails later in the event but he had to come wide in the home stretch. Sylis finished like a train and cut down Gollen in great style, and Gollen in turn also succumbed to the Paeroa winner, Maricrana, who must now be acceded as a fair sort of stayer. Out of the straight Gollen was hotly pursued by Beau Rosa, Mountain Glory, Maricrana, Conspiracy, Redingote and Florida. Along the back there was not much change other than that Mountain Glory was trail ing the leader and Martial Song, Conspiracy and Sylis were occupying positions, and at the five furlongs the last pair were Silver Treasure and Huntore. Gollen and Mountain Glory turned for home just ahead of Redingote, Martial Song and Maricrana, with Cairnwhin putting in an appearance wide out, and Sylis commencing his run \ut from the rails. Conspiracy came on well for fourth ahead of Florida, Huntore, Beau Astaire and Martial Song. Sylis is not engaged in this week’s Mitchelson Cup, nor is Maricrana. Gollen may do better if he is not again forced into the role of pacemaker. Lord Moss bore out all the good things said of him by literally running away with the Electric Handicap, giving a great exhibition of free galloping. A warm favourite, he made light of his handicap ol No. 13 at the barrier, for he was in front in less than a furlong and from then on the field had a grand view of his smooth action. He was three lengths clear at the turn from Lord Foxbridge, Consulate, Lady Coronach, Lady Carmel, Vigilantia, Parawera and Stanfred. Lord Moss gave an exhibition in the final stages and was easing up to win by five lengths—and it could have been much more. He is a grand colt and may be a worthy opponent for Gold Script in the Guineas t’lis week. Vigilantia was an easy secmd over Lady Carmel (at an astonishing price) and General Menteith, with Silver Birc », Lady Coronacli and Falline next Stanfred never looked likely after he received a slight check early. Lord Foxbridge will be a better horse for this race, his first of the season.
