OUTSIDERS TRIUMPH ON OPENING DAY OF SPRING CARNIVAL AT RANDWICK

SYDNEY, Oct 2 (Recd 8.20 pm).— In perfect weather conditions and on a holding track the Newcastle grey Denali created a surprise to his own stable when he won the Epsom handicap at Randwick yesterday. Starting at long odds he beat the favourite, Buzmark, by a length, with another long chance, Wiranya, close up third. A feature of the race was the collapse in the straight, of the favoured Count Aulone, who, though advantageously weighted, refused to fight on. Count Aulone led into the straight but in the last furlong the race was between Denali and Buzmark, with Wiranya coming sensationally into the picture. Another shock was administered by the colt Playboy, who made turf history by winning the A. J. C. Derby as a maiden. It was his ninth start, but previously Playboy had distinguished himself only by a marked proclivity for sleeping and eating. The trainer said he had been kicked into wakefulness at noon to be taken to tlie course. In the Derby, however, Playboy triumphed over early interference which almost threw the jockey, Moore, from the saddle. He stayed well under control, however, and finished powerfully to beat the favourite, Delta, by a good margin. By decisively defeating the wellfavoured Carbon Copy in the Colin Stephen Stakes Vagabond became outright favourite for the Melbourne Cup. The race was oddly run, with Cronides racing away to lead the field by 50 lengths. Vagabond led the chase and had his measure with a furlong to go. Carbon Copy just failed to catch Cronides and was himself nearly pegged back by the New Zealander King's Ransom, who was prominent throughout over his favourite distance. Results are:—
