Sporting Calendar For Marton Enthusiasts Very Light Tomorrow

Tomorrow’s sporting calendar in Marton is very light, in fact not for many weeks has there been so little entertainment for local sporting fans on a Saturday afternoon. However, with no major sporting activities arranged, local residents will be able to evote their energies to preparing both flower and vegetable gardens ready for spring sowing. With the spate of fine weather experienced lately, the grass has come away quickly and the whirring of lawn mowers will be the melody in many streets tomorrow.

There is not even any football in Marton tomorrow, with the exception of a practice, and the main attraction for the afternoon will be the representative basketball matches between Wanganui and Marton teams. There will be the usual golf matches. Marton harriers are fielding two teams in the Palmerston North to Feilding relay races. The colts leave Marton at 12.15 p.m. and the seniors at 12.45 p.m. The final of the third .grade (open) knock-out Rugby competition will be played a t Marton tomorrow, when the home team will play Athletic. When these two teams met before at Marton. the game ended in a 5-all draw. The Rangitikei senior representatives will play their final game of the season with a match against the Manawatu senior second division reps, at Palmerston North. As far as It Is known this is the first time a Rangitikei senior rep. team has supplied the major attraction on the showgrounds oval. Rangitikei players should give a good account of themselves as this is their fifth game together in six weeks, so the team should have acquired combination by. now. The Rangitikei team is to have a practice game tomorrow at Marton against a combined Marton Old Boys’ thirds open and intermediate teams. The game commences at 2 p.m. All members of the Old Boys Club are requested to attend.

JUNIOR NATIONAL PARTY HEARS INTERESTING ADDRESS. A record number of members attended the Marton Junior National Party meeting held recently when the | guest speaker was Mr. L. W. Griffin. Visitors were present from Remucra, Dannevirke, Woodville and Hunterville and they were extended a cordial welcome by the chairman, Mr. Douglas Howard. Mr Griffin spoke on the mechanism of an aeroplane. Reports on the recent Dominion conference were given by Mr. Howard while Mr. Malcolm Gray spoke or the working of an Auckland divisions‘ branch. The meeting decided to donate th ? proceeds from one of its forthcomin : social events to the funds of the Marton Free Kindergarten Association. against Wanganui in the near future. A debate against the Hunterville branch has been arranged for this month. The general knowledge quiz arranged by Miss E. M. Jones was won by the town team by a narrow margin from the country team. MARTON SCOTTISH SOCIETY. Songs, games, exhibition dancing and other dancing comprised the varied programme arranged by the Marton Scottish Society, when a very successful Ingleside for members and friends was recently held in St. Andrew’s Hall. Among the visitors was a sextette of ladies from Wanganui in a selection of Scottish songs. Mr. E. C. Morgan, with his pipes, played for the dances. Other items on the programme were given by Misses Cooper and Fogelberg, J. Towler and Mrs Cooper and Mr. Dailey in songs and the two ladies of the pipe band, Miss Gow and Pipemajor E. Christie, with the pipes, accompanied by the drums.

Owing to indisposition, the Chief, A. Stuart, was unable to be present, but Mr. H. Stewart, apologising for him, thanked all' who had isslsted with the programme.

RAINFALL IN MARTON LAST (MONTH ABOVE AVERAGE.

While rain fell on 16 days last month, the total fall of 3.92 inches was just slightly above the August average of 3.28 inches, according to figures kept by Mr. K. W. Sandford, Marton. Last year the August fall was 2.19 inches.

The rainfall for the eight months of this year is well in excess of the amount for the same period 12 months ago. To date 3417 inches have fallen as against 27.52 inches last year an increase of. nearly seven inches, or nearly an inch per month.

Heaviest fall last month was recorded on the 2nd. when the reading was 1.06 inches. That was the only time over an inch of rain fell in 24 hours.

August figures were: Ist. .46, 2nd. 1.06, 4th. .01, 7th. .45, Bth. .18, 9th. .02, 10th. .02, 13th. .20, 17th. 07, 20th. .03, 21st. .29, 24th. .70, 25th. .18, 26th. .22, 28th. .01.
