Rangitikei’s Two Good Wins Over Wanganui; Other Match Lost

Both the Rangitikei women’s hockey teams which leave in a fortnight’s time for the New Zealand championships registered convincing wins on Saturday at Marton, over Wanganui representative teams. A Rangitikei team selected from B division teams was narrowly beaten by one goal by a Wanganui C team. The Rangitikei A team has now had three games and three wins, scoring 24 goals, while only one has been regfiistered against it. The team beat Manawatu 11-0, Taranaki 7-1, and on Saturday Wanganui 6-0— rather an auspicious record. Saturday’s games resulted:— Rangitikei A 6, Wanganui A 0; Rangitikei B 3, Wanganui B 0; Wanganui C 2, Rangitikei C 1. Men’s hockey: Marton 5, Ohakea 5. The two A grade teams supplied a fast game, but Wanganui took a long time to settle down, and during that period Rangitikei rushed in four goals which was the half-time score. Wanganui attacked and defended better after the interval and Rangitikei could notch only two further goals. The Rangitikei forward line again combined well but the halves were inclined to play too far back. M. McLennan, in goal ,made two fine saves but generally she was not bothered much. The Wanganui goalie made some really good saves, especially in the second spell. Wanganui did not have the striking power to deal with an opposition that was superior in practically all departments. Two of Rangitikei’s goals came from penalty corners. The scorers were J. Judd 2), J. Paterson (2), L. Paterson and B. Iwikau. Interesting hockey was seen when the B teams met, Rangitikei owing their victory to better penetration in the circle. For Rangitikei M. Cameron, right half, played an excellent game, and so did G. Ferguson (left wing). All the Rangitikei backs acquitted themselves well. In the Wanganui team E. Myer was very effective at centre half, while the right full-back, M. Karimu, cleared well. M. Bott, left wing, was the pick of the forward line. Rangitikei’s goals came from the sticks of P. McNae, P. Whenuaora, and L. Bailey. The encounter between the C teams was inclined to be rather scrappy. Wanganui led at half-time by one to nil and it was’t long before the score had advanced to two, P. Gibson being responsible for both, goals. Half-way through the second spell S. Tremaine notched Rangitikei’s solitary goal. The Wanganui goalie, Miss Wainhouse. played an outstanding game and had it not been for her Rangitikei would have scored more goals. Wanganui were also very good in speculating. The right half for Rangitikei, Miss Downs, was in good form.
