Indications Are That The Third Cricket Test Will Be Drawn; England Declares At 9 For 440

New Zealand Started To Bat At 11.10; 73 For Two At Lunch

LONDON, July 26 (Rec. 11.50 pm).—England having lost their chance of a win yesterday by the slowness of their opening batsmen, it is difficult to see how a draw can be avoided in this, the third test, at Old Trafford.

England declared the innings closed at nine down for 440 and New Zealand started to bat in the second innings at ten minutes past 11. At lunch the scoreboard read 73 for two. the dismissed batsmen being Scott, bowled Jackson, 22, and Hadlee, caught Brown, bowled Hollies, 13.

Contrary to some expectations Brown didn't declare this morning; he walked out with Bailey to continue th e innings and they proceeded to give Hutton a lesson on how an attempt should be made to score rapidly. Against Cowie and Cave they hit freely as they could and were looking for every possible single. The wicket is still playing well and it is unlikely that it will wear sufficiently to encourage England’s hope of

getting New Zealand out later in the day. It is a much cooler day, with heavy clouds hiding the sun, a change of temperature that was certainly welcomed by the New Zealanders. Both Brown and Bailey showed some nice shots, Brom pulling Cowie neatly, Bailey using his leg glance and swinging at Cave. He reached 50 with a lofted pull for a total of 75 miutes batting. The New Zealand fielding was again keen and clean; a difficult chance was given to Wallace at cover by Brown, when he swung at Cowie, the ball being just too high for the short Aucklander. In 25 minutes 37 runs were added to bring up 400—Bailey 52, Brown 21.
