Pacifist Speakers On West Coast Given Poor Reception
GREYMOUTH, Last Night (PA).— A hostile reception was accorded anticonscription speakers at a meeting attended by about 50 persons at Kumara last evening. The speakers were Mr J. Reedy (Kumara), president of the Westland Timber Workers Union, and Mr R. H. Mitchell (Greymouth), a member of the West Coast Anti-Conscription League and also of the Communist Party. They were booed and counted out at many stages of the evening while the singing of patriotic songs frequently drowned the speakers’ voices. Though a motion supporting an anti-conscription vote was moved and seconded, it was not put to the meeting.
“The meeting did not get out of control altogether, but it was very near that. ’ stated the Mayor of Kumara 'Mr W. 11. G. Stewart), who presided.
