FLOOD WATERS INVADE URUTI VALLEY DISTRICT

Last Night '• (PA).—When the rivers rose sharply in the Uruti district today as the result of torrentai rain throughout the > night and this morning, the AucklandNew Plymouth Highway was flooded 'in th e Uruti Valley to a depth of I more than six feet in plats and motor I traffic was held up from about midday. I The water began to recede in the late afternoon and shortly after 7 I pun. had fallen sufficiently to allow motorists to proceed. About 80 cars I were stranded at various points from i Mount Messenger to four miles south of Uruti. Fences on low-lying land 'throughout the valley were completely covered by water, but stock i had been moved to higher country. The flood wateris also made the Okoke Road impassable and a major Islip completely covered that road about 10 miles from its junction with 'flLA u £ Ki ® nc L’ ?<e '2.F | y r -‘ o uth road, main iii this country,” said Mr. Luxford. “You will be sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on each charge except the drunkenness charge, on which you will be convicted and discharged.'
