MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR INDONESIA

Statement By Netherlands Information Bureau With reference to a recent report to the effect that the Government of the Republic of Indonesia has made an urgent appeal to the Australian Government lor medical supplies, the Netherlands Information Bureau issued the following statement from Batavia regarding the action situation:

“After stocks had been taken on June 10, all medical supplies which were at that moment at the disposal of the Netherlands authorities m Djokja, were handed over to authorities of the Republic. A document pertaining to this transfer was signed by the Secretary General of the Republic's Department of Health, Dr. Surono.

“These stocks were sufficient for one month. In addition, all medical supplies which were still available from the stores taken over by the Netherlands Army on December 19, were handed back. Also for this transfer, an official receipt was signed by Dr. Surono. Finally, the Netherlands authorities, in anticipation of official arrangements, offered an immediate issue of medical supplies sufficient for three months.

“Dr. Surono refused this offer in connection with the 'sovereign position of the Republic.' He wished to have this matter dealt with officially. This is now under discussion between the Republican and Netherlands delegations.

“In the meantime, quantities of smallpox vaccine for the population and tetanus vaccine for the Republican Army (TNI) have been handed over to the Republic by the Netherlands authorities.’’ ,
