MORE INTER-CLUB GAMES URGED AMONG BOWLING CLUBS IN WANGANUI
Whether there should be more inter-club play among bowling clubs in Wanganui, formed a fairly lively subject for discussion at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Bowling Club on Saturday. It was suggested by Mr . J. H. Bretherton tnat the standard of play in Wanganui could be greatly improved, and he thought that what was lacking was inter-club play. Members of the club played among themselves and that was what tne club was for, but when it came to competitions with other centres, or clubs, members did not play up to the s/indard required. Mr. F. C. Jannings took the view that bowling was not played just for the sake of competition, but ibr its social side, for members to come to their own greens and play amongst themselves. Many did not like going away to other greens, but preferred to stay on their own home green. Mr. Lee, who has recently joined the club, and has had experience in the South Island and in Auckland, said that he had noticed the lacK of interclub matches in Wanganui, and while, as a new member of the club, he did not want to force his opinions, he thought there would be a definite improvement in play and keenness for the game if more inter-club matches were arranged. Mr. G. N. Boulton, vice-president, who is also president of the Wanganui Bowling Centre, said that at one time he had the same feelings as Mr. | Jannings, but had since changed that view. In Taranaki the clubs lived for their inter-club contests, and the standard of play was better. He believed that Wanganui was the only centre in the Dominion that din no' foster inter-club play to the fullest : poscsible extent. There were but three inter-club contests, tne Senior Shield, the Willis Shield and the Nixon Cup. The matter was really not one for ] any individual club, as the centre i would have to be consulted. , Mr J. B. Jack, as one who had long c association with the game, said that ] inter-club contests in Wanganui were ] encouraged to a greater extent before the depression. It was possible, too, ? that the standard of bowling was c
higher then, though that would be hard to say, because it was so difficult to make comparisons. The matter was referred to the committee to give some suitable instruction to the club's representatives on the centre and to at least have the matter discussed there.
