LIGHTWEIGHT BOXING TITLE RETAINED
Williams Wins On T.K.O. BOLT PROMOTED FOR YOUTH BY TWO COMEDIANS. LOS ANGELES, July 22 (Recd. 11 pm).—The world lightweight champion Ike Williams, 1351b5, retained the title by scoring a technical knock-out against Enrique Bolanos, of Mexico, in the fourth round of a bout promoted by the comedians Abbott and Costello to help pay off Costello’s 83,000-dollar Youth Foundation. The gross gate was 106,000 dollars. Williams, instead of taking the champion’s usual 40 per cent., is accepting only 7i per cent., and giving the rest to Costello’s fund. Bolanos get 17i per cent. Is was a tense, savage battle right from the bell in the first round. Williams’ hard straight lefts and lurking rights took toll from the beginning. Bolanos weaved, and danced away with Williams plodding after him. The referee. Jack Dempsey, stopped the fight two minutes 40 seconds after the start of the fourth round. Groggy and half blind, Bolanos rallied desperately and then sank beneath a battery of blows from Williams. It was Williams’ third victory overBolanos. He knocked him out in 1946 and won a split decision in 1948.
