COMMUNISTS WARN THE BRITISH IN HONGKONG
SHANGHAI, June 7 (Recd 6 pm). Shanghai Communist Radio in Peiping last night warned that certain British actions in Hongkong were “a challenge to the Chinese people,” and could lead to serious consequences. The radio added that nine “Democratic parties “in north China jointly protested against the Hongkong Legislative Council ordinance of May 25, ordering compulsory registration of all societies and organisations and authorising a search and arrest of members. The radio complained that the ordinance would turn Hongkong into “a police state.” It added that 99 per cent, of Hongkong’s population were Chinese, and they could not help having relations with the motherland. Such a reactionary measure as this ordinance would “unavoidably injure the friendship between British and Chinese peoples, and unavoidably hamper the establishment of normal relations between Britain and the new China.”
