Anti-Lynching Bill Passes Committee Of The American Senate
WASHINGTON, June 6 (Recd. 6 pm)—An Anti-Lynching Bill was approved today by the Senate Judiciary Committee A similar Bill was approved by the committee towards the end of last Congress, but was not brought before the Senate for vote. The legislation provides a maximum penalty of 10,000 dollars fin e or 20 years’ gaol, or both, for conspiracy to incite, aid or commit lynching. It would apply to peace officers as well as members of a lynch mob. Any officer who wilfully fails, or refuses to protect persons against lynching can b e fined a maximum of 5000 dollars or sent to gaol for five years, or both.
The next-of-kin of a person who is lynched would be entitled under the Bill to file a civil damage suit against thos e responsible for lynching.
